Over 40 pet owners proudly gathered for the 11th annual Wiener Dog Races at the NL Pet Expo in Mount Pearl this weekend.
“People will train,” said Tanya Martin, founder of Dachshunds of Newfoundland and Labrador and an organizer of the race. “People wanna win. Nobody likes losing.”
This year, 43 dachshunds competed in the races.
“They’re in preassigned heats based on their age,” said Martin. “The winner of each heat goes on to compete in the championship.”

Although it isn’t quite summer yet, blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, is already showing up in New Brunswick waterways.
Meghann Bruce, a researcher and instructor with the University of New Brunswick Canadian Rivers Institute, said as soon as the ice went out in early May, there was a “bloom” in Blue Bell Lake near Grand Falls.
“Blooms could be happening right now, so people should be watching for them anytime they’re around the water,” she said.
Bruce said there are two types of blue-green algae blooms.

Two pit bulls at a Minnesota animal shelter went viral this week after one jumped over a wall to be reunited with her BFF, and the cuteness is just in time for National Best Friends Day.
Dogs Brenda and Linda were dropped off at the Friends of Minneapolis Animal Care & Control shelter in Minneapolis on May 22.
Workers at the shelter think Brenda, the brown one, is 4 and Linda is 7.
