Owning unhealthy designer animals, such as flat-faced dogs or cats with folded ears, could soon be banned in the Netherlands.
“We make life miserable for innocent animals, purely because we think they are ‘beautiful’ and ‘cute’,” the country’s Minister of Culture, Nature and Food Quality, Piet Adema, said in a statement.
“That is why today we are taking the big step towards a Netherlands where no pet has to suffer from his or her appearance.”
The Minister said he was looking to ban the ownership of designer breeds as well as photos of them in advertising and on social media.…

New Hampshire is the only state that allows adults to drive without wearing seatbelts. Want to use your dog instead? Go for it, for now.
While the state currently has no lapdog-related laws, the Legislature is considering a bill that would make it illegal for someone to drive with “an animal of any size on their person.” The proposal is likely a longshot in the “Live Free or Die” state, but it’s generating plenty of debate.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought that this would become one of the more controversial…

A new study published in the CABI journal Human-Animal Interactions suggests that companion animals—including dogs, cats, fish and birds—do not significantly benefit the emotional health of owners with severe mental illness.
The results showed that owning an animal was not significantly associated with the well-being, depression, anxiety or loneliness scores for owners with a range of severe mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder or psychosis.
The researchers, who followed up on an earlier survey conducted in 2021 within the same cohort to assess animal ownership and mental health during COVID-19, say their findings counteract the commonly…

THUNDER BAY – The average summer temperature for May, June & July is between 19 and 23 degrees.
For the average adult, that could be called a perfect temperature. However, once inside a metal box with glass windows, that opinion might change quickly as the temperature starts to rise, especially for a dog.
The No Hot Pets campaign from the OSPCA has launched for the season. Focusing on educating pet owners and those wishing…
Summer is well on its way and, as such, many Americans are taking trips across the country and the world. Nearly half, 45% plan to travel more this summer than they did last, according to a May 2023 survey of 1,000 Americans by marketing firm Prodege.
For those who have pets, traveling can get tricky. “We still have all the pandemic puppies that are now full-sized dogs,” says Angelique Rewers, founder of consulting firm BoldHaus. Their owners will need help taking care of them when they’re gone. In fact, some might need help whether they end up going away or…
Is there anything cuter than a sleeping puppy? You look over from the table and there they are, man’s best friend sleeping amid the chaos of your household. They may even be dreaming about you.
It’s a swoon-worthy sight, but new pet owners may not know if their dog is sleeping too much, or too little. USA TODAY asked a veterinarian about everything you need to know when it comes to sleep for our furry friends.
How many hours a day do dogs sleep?
Most dogs sleep about half the day, says veterinarian Nicole Savageau. That’s about 12-14 hours. This…

Over 40 pet owners proudly gathered for the 11th annual Wiener Dog Races at the NL Pet Expo in Mount Pearl this weekend.
“People will train,” said Tanya Martin, founder of Dachshunds of Newfoundland and Labrador and an organizer of the race. “People wanna win. Nobody likes losing.”
This year, 43 dachshunds competed in the races.
“They’re in preassigned heats based on their age,” said Martin. “The winner of each heat goes on to compete in the championship.”
All dogs go home with medals, but the big winners receive…
