Marking its first Northern animal transfer of the year, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society has returned from Northern Ontario with 32 cats that will have the opportunity to find loving homes thanks to a unique partnership.

Ontario SPCA animal centers in Sudbury, Muskoka, Midland, Barrie, Orillia and Orangeville will find homes for 32 of the cats through their adoption programs.

The special feline passengers arrived yesterday and were transported by the Ontario SPCA from the Second Chance Pet Network in Dryden, located approximately 1,300 kilometers north of Sudbury. The Ontario SPCA works with the northern rescue each year to help it find homes for the cats in its care. In many northern communities, there are more adoptable animals than there are families who can give them homes.

“We have the capacity to welcome these cats, which allows our animal partners in the North to assist more animals who need sheltering and care,” says Arista Wogenstahl, Regional Manager, Northern Outreach Services, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “By working together, we are able to give 56 cats the opportunity to find a family who will love them.”

“We are grateful to the Ontario SPCA for their assistance in finding forever homes for our furry friends and companions,” says Ann Owens, Founder and Director, Second Chance Pet Network. “Because of this, we are able to help other communities that may not be as fortunate as we are.”

A lack of access to basic animal wellness services, such as veterinarians and spay/neuter services, has contributed to an increase in animal populations across Northern Canada. The Ontario SPCA and its partners work alongside communities to deliver much-needed resources, such as food and mobile wellness services, and to manage animal populations through spay/neuter and re-homing initiatives.

Interested in adopting? Visit the Ontario SPCA’s adoption page at ontariospca.ca/adopt to meet animals available for adoption.
