Site work begins for CRS ambulance substation in Maugansville
Ground was broken last Wednesday for Community Rescue Service’s Maugansville substation off Maugans Avenue.
“It’s a great move forward. It’s been a long time coming,” Deputy Chief Robert Buck said.

CRS bought the land at 13725 Oliver Drive, north of Maugans Avenue, 13 years ago, Buck said.
The substation has been planned for several years, but the nonprofit got caught up in appeals by the owners of a nearby hotel.
The new ambulance station is an approximately $3 million project, including land acquisition, design and construction, Buck said. BFM Architects, of Hagerstown, did the design work and United Enterprises of Greencastle, Pa., was the general contractor. Middletown Valley Bank is financing the project.
Buck said CRS officials expect to ramp up the capital campaign this summer to help with the project. Information about that fundraising effort will be posted on CRS’s Facebook page.
Construction is expected to take nine months so, weather permitting, the new substation could be ready around Easter next year.
When the Maugansville substation opens it will house one ambulance, the one now stationed at Maugansville Goodwill Volunteer Fire Co., Buck said.
CRS officials planned for future growth with the substation, which will be able to house four ambulances, he said.
Urban Works to open office in downtown Hagerstown
A new co-working space is opening Wednesday downtown, according to the Hagerstown Department of Community and Economic Development.
Urban Works at 6 W. Washington St., will be open at 1 pm, according to the city. Owner Jay Sachdev and staff will be on hand to answer questions.
According to its website, urbanworksrentals.com, Urban Works has short, medium and long-term leases available for shared work spaces. Benefits range from free WiFi and furnished office space to lockable offices and weekly boardroom access.
Hagerstown deputy director for water and wastewater promoted from within
The City of Hagerstown proudly announces the promotion of Tyler Puffenberger to Deputy Director for Water and Wastewater.
Since 2014, Puffenberger, who holds a 4-year degree in criminal justice, has worked as both an operator and assistant superintendent of water production at the City’s RC Willson Water Treatment Plant.
“I’m excited to welcome Tyler to his new position,” said Nancy Hausrath, City Utilities Director. “Tyler has contributed greatly to the successful operation of the Water Treatment Plant in his previous roles and has consistently demonstrated his ability to work with staff and contractors to move the department forward. His dedication, work ethics, and institutional knowledge will ensure continued required regulatory compliance and enable necessary growth within the Water and Wastewater Department,” she added.
Puffenberger is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the water and wastewater facilities.
His first day as Deputy Director for Water and Wastewater was June 12.
Greencastle natural foods and supplements store marks 20 years, new location
The 20th anniversary and grand reopening at a new location will be celebrated with an open house Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15, at Alternative Choices in Greencastle.
Tammy Young opened Alternative Choices in 2003 at a mini-mall south of Greencastle, then moved to the first block of North Allison Street 17 years ago.
In April, the business specializing in natural foods and supplements relocated from that location — behind the former Pure and Simple Café — to 13 S. Carlisle St.
The new store offers a larger, brighter and more open space to display an array of vitamins, herbs, pet supplies, aroma therapy and other health-promoting products.
“Everything we do is about health,” Young said. “Hopefully people will consider their health before they have to take medications.”
She hopes to restart Alternative Choices’ educational component — which was paused due to COVID-19 — with classes and speakers.
The new location will also allow more participation in downtown events, as well as better parking.
The open house will be held from 10 am to 5 pm Friday and 9 am to 3 pm Saturday. It will include vendors with samples, refreshments and drawings for baskets.
