She said every year, animals end up hurt and run away from home after being scared by the explosive noise.

An upcoming policy in Pickering will ban rat poison and other rodenticides on all city properties.
On Monday, the city council heard from delegates about the risks posed to dogs as they chase poisoned animals in their backyards.
“Since rodenticides don’t kill instantly, rodents remain active and available as prey,” said Janice Freund, a member of the group Rodenticide Free Ontario. “Predators do not recognize the presence of poison in the prey, leading to unintended exposure and poisoning.”
“I myself have lost one of my sweet rescue dogs to rodenticide toxicity,” said Allison Hansen.

Despite opposition from residents, the Saanich council unanimously approved Wednesday evening a strategy that includes mandating leeches for pets at 84 per cent of the district’s park space.
The strategy has met with heavy objection from dog owners, who started a petition and protested the strategy outside the Saanich municipal hall on Friday.
The vote was deferred from Monday to Wednesday due to a large number of speakers at Monday’s council meeting.
Previously, under-control dogs were allowed to be off-leash in most of the district’s 172 parks and several beaches.
Starting this fall, only 57 parks will have leash-optional areas,…
